Surprising
Little Johnny and his mother were on a train. Johnny leant over and started to whisper in his mother's ear.
“Johnny, how many times have I told you,” said his mother, “it's rude to whisper. If you have something to say, say it out loud.”
“OK,” said Johnny, “why does the lady over there look like an ugly, haggard[1] old witch ?”

Reason
At the end of the school year, I asked my first-year Spanish students to write what they liked and disliked about the class. This, I told them, would help me do a better job next year. One student wrote : “The reason I liked Spanish was that I learned a new language. The reason I didn't like Spanish was that I didn't understand it.”

Remind
Our teenage son, Marc, never misses an opportunity to remind us that he needs his own car. One morning, as I drove him to school, it was apparent that we would be late. I asked him to write a note to his teacher, which I would sign when we arrived.
At school, he handed me a pen and the note, which read “Marc is late this morning due to car trouble, and the trouble is Marc doesn't have his own car, and his mother drives too slow.”

Father and Mother
John was playing with a ball in the street. He kicked it too hard and it broke the window of Mrs Green's house. The ball fell inside. Mrs Green came to the window with the ball and shouted at John. So John ran away but he still wanted his ball back. A few minutes later John returned and knocked at the door. When Mrs Green answered it, he said, “My father's going to come and fix your window very soon.”
After a few minutes a man came to the door with tools in his hand, so Mrs Green let John take his ball away. When the man finished fixing the window, he said to Mrs Green, “That will cost your exactly ten dollars.”
“But aren't you the father of that young boy?” Mrs Green asked, looking very surprised. The man was equally surprised and he answered, “No. Aren't you his mother?”

Question
Polly went to school when she was six years old. She liked her first day very much. Her teacher, Miss Yates, was very nice, and the other children in her class were nice, too. But at the end of the second day, when the other children left the classroom, Polly stayed behind and waited.
Miss Yates had some work to do and did not see Polly at first, but then she looked up and saw her. “Why didn't you go with the others, Polly?” she asked kindly. “Did you want to ask me a question?”
“Yes, Miss Yates.” Polly said.
“What is it?” Miss Yates asked.
“What did I do in school today?” Polly said.
Miss Yates laughed. “What did YOU do in school today?” she said. “Why did you ask me that, Polly?”
“Because I'm going to go home now,” Polly answered, “and my mother's going to ask me.”
